ok, I just tried this, and it didn't replace the icon ingame. Not sure what's happening here...

Impossible, because that's exactly what I did in my "tutorial" in this post:
viewtopic.php?p=28614#p28614
It's shown in the screenshot how files should look like, and what folder it should be in.
Try again, copying and renaming files is the easiest thing possible when it comes to game modding. Just place the mentioned files to look as in the screenshot, and the game will load a new texture instead of that skull icon.

I'm glad that you made your first mod
The next goal is possibly to generate a new icon as a replacement.
