Absolute Value, right?

I believe |x + 1| + |x| = 3 is the same as x + 1 + x = 3, because all absolute value does is make the values within positive. Combine like terms, and you have 2x + 1 = 3. Next, subtract 1 from both sides, and you have 2x = 2. Finally, ide both sides by 2, and you have x = 1.

Lego is right. But normally we're using to being way too fast because we have a lot of responsibilities and things to do(and also because im lazy of doing these counts lol), besides of the fact that we're rational people and we don't need to do all of it.
Then lets just use the deductive method instead of the didactic one.

*If x+1+x=3, how many numbers do we need to complete a total of 3? well we might suppose it is 2. But in case there are 2 x, therefore each x counts as 1.*

In other words:

x + 1 + x = 3

|1| + 1 + |1| = 3

x= |1| .´. x=1

note: |x| is just a representation, because we don't know what is x. Thus they might put anything to "confuse" our life, but as we're rational people, it won't work.

By the way, luk's method is very useful, and... much simpler than what I was using. Guesstimation is incredibly helpful, but it can be overly complicated when the Algebraic questions themselves are more complicated and less obvious (e.g. quadratic equations like 27x^2 + 3x + 10 = 0). I recommend learning both ways, guesstimation for simpler equations and regular formulas for the more advanced ones.

Anyway, I think there are 2 possible ways.

I think x may be 1 and -1.
Why?

|x+1|+|x|=3

So for example:
|1+1|+|1|=3

BUT with absolute value:
|-1+1|+|-1|=3

So on the test I did that x = 1 or -1.
