Re: Where are yall?
Sorry but if x is equal to -2 the equation should be fine too... cause |x+1|---->|-2+1|----->|-1|---->absolute value is just 1..... 1+ |x|.... x is -2-----> absolute value is 2..... 1+2=3. I think that x can be -2 too ...Legolego40 wrote:Absolute Value, right?Leader wrote:Night:
You + Timo + Me + everyone who wants = play today evening (Saturday)?
I'm already ready for sleeping, due that I took bath very early today.
So if you guys want to waste time, then we can do it
Of course math homework still is not done
Maybe you want to help me?
|x+1|+|x|=3
Who knows what's x?
I believe |x + 1| + |x| = 3 is the same as x + 1 + x = 3, because all absolute value does is make the values within positive. Combine like terms, and you have 2x + 1 = 3. Next, subtract 1 from both sides, and you have 2x = 2. Finally, ide both sides by 2, and you have x = 1.
So... solutions should be: 1 and -2

Re: Where are yall?
But Matty...
|2x| = -2 or -2
So |x| = 1 or -1...
I don't think you are right with -2...
BUT maybe you're right... jesus, now I don't know...

Re: Where are yall?
Now I think you may be right...
I just thought we can count |-1+1| before, so it be like 1+1 +|x|...
But maybe we really have to count it before... Jesus xD I trust you, so I'll write like you said.

Re: Where are yall?
Well, it isn't ||x|+1|, so you can't solve it in that way. If you have |+1-2| you do |-1| and then it is equal to 1. You can't change signes of single numbers. The absolute value must be applied for the whole score into |.....| and not to the single numbers ....Leader wrote:Now I think you may be right...

The number of the day is 2. *Because 1 + 1= 2*
* The mind of a person thinks different of another one, that's why is important to share our knowledges.
So, the answer is 2! xD

Re: Where are yall?
|-1 + 1| + |-1| is |0| + |1|, or 1. Thus, -1 wouldn't work.Leader wrote:Hmm, thanks for helpingn guys.
Anyway, I think there are 2 possible ways.
I think x may be 1 and -1.
Why?
|x+1|+|x|=3
So for example:
|1+1|+|1|=3
BUT with absolute value:
|-1+1|+|-1|=3
So on the test I did that x = 1 or -1.
Hope it's correct ^^
Though, luk and Matty are right; x = 1 & x = -2, because |-2 + 1| + |-2| is |-1| + |-2|, or 1 + 2, which equals 3.
By the way, this got me wondering: should we have a homework help topic?
