Lol, I do the same. But it’s so uncomfortable. And if I want the same change in multiple places in multiple files, then this becomes very time consuming very fast.
Oh. That is pretty decent protection. Maybe something like SHA-512 there?
I see I have the same hex editor.
…and all I wanted, is just for ferrum to stick around. Amazing, how impossible it is, to change something like that there.

Yes, EE2 has got a nice protection against modification & cheats in Multiplayer. I mostly like this "security", but it used to cause a lot of problems in the past. For example, any .exe modification disallowed joining to multiplayer games. We (someone else helped with that back then) disabled the checksum check and CD-KEY verification later in UP1.5. It helped a lot to finally make Multiplayer usable.
