EE2 on MacOS

Post by hufflepuff »

Hey guys,
does anyone have a working setup for playing ee2 on my mac running MacOS?

I tried running it on an VirtualBox with Win10 with 4GB RAM and 256 GPU RAM but its laggy as hell...
So I activated 3D and 2D acceleration in VirtualBox, still the same...

But since YouTube videos are also laggy on that setup I guess its not even related to EE2 but I thought it would be nice to ask here - maybe someone has a working setup or an idea?

Best,

In my opinion, apples are healthy and should be eaten at least once a day...

Hello.
EE2 is generally a laggy game. You can read about these problems here: http://ee2.eu/help/#lags

VirtualBox isn't a good solution. It reduces the game performance horribly.

Have you tried to use Wine for Mac? https://www.howtogeek.com/263211/how-to ... with-wine/ It should work better, but not bugs-less.
(Consider checking other tutorials, I just picked the first link on Google)

The best solution in my opinion, would be installing Windows (maybe Windows 10) on your MacOS as the secondary Operating System: https://www.howtogeek.com/186907/how-to ... boot-camp/ (not activated version of Windows would restart every 4 hours I think. I haven't got a knowledge if using non-activated version of Windows for a long time is legal or not). Then you can be sure that you'll have the native graphics drivers for your hardware, so the game would run without a performance loss (still not as fast as other games, but much better than with the VirtualBox). I would consider installing it even to just play other games than EE2, which are not released for MacOS. It would give you much more possibilities of your laptop.

I have been using Parallels under Mac OS for a Loong time now. At least 5 versions of OS-X.

It works well - both EE1 and EE2.

VMWare didn't handle the graphics requirements correct, and Wine (last time I ran it), was hard pressed to handle anything with anything near that level of complexity. I was able to get it to run Remote Desktop - but it took me a long time grabbing DLLs out of a Windows configuration and putting them in with the program to get it to work. I'd expect it would be pretty hard to get it to work -but if you don't want to pay for the professional grade VM system ($79 or something like that), you might have to resort to that.

I've successfully ran it on a MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and now a Mac Pro (This baby has 12 cores, 64 GB of Ram and runs EE without even noticing.)

One thing I like about Parallels is that the overhead is really low to run VMs - especially if they are idle. Right now, I'm running a Minecraft server, and a Windows XP install (for EE 1/2) and it is running at 1.5% CPU (And it maxes at 1200% due to the 12 CPUS)

Good luck, it is a great game.

Luckily, VirtualBox is not the only option here :). There are many options by which you can try app on mac. You can go for Wine Emulator or you can try with Apple boot camp, both are good options :)
