I got this: https://forum.ee2.eu/oldpics/o-2I88UM1.png when installing the patch. My game's from GOG, so I changed the name in the x86 folder from GOG.com to Sierra, and it still didn't work. Ideas?

Update:

Installed patch 1.4: https://forum.ee2.eu/oldpics/o-q9Oqqgu.png. Install folder is now /Program Files (x86)/Sierra. Opening the 1.4 launcher (shortcut on desktop), got me the same screen as last time (terminal with purple background, and small minimized ee2 window). But now, I've also got this guy on my taskbar: https://forum.ee2.eu/oldpics/o-366IdHd.png, which reveals it's EE2 upon secondary click. Opening it, I get a momentary flash of black screen and a snippet of music, before it minimizes again. Mouseover gives this: https://forum.ee2.eu/oldpics/o-0lSwsNu.png. I checked the .cfg files, both have the correct display settings. All files are running in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3.

So, I ended up installing windows 7 on VirtualBox (crazy, I know), and it works! w00! However, I'm trying to up the resolution past 1024x768 (got patch 1.4), but when I go into Video settings, all I see is the default settings: https://forum.ee2.eu/oldpics/o-FaMIvup.png. The .cfg files in AppData have been changed to have displayMode of 1280x960x32, still no dice. Am I missing something? Also, suggestions for fixing the Windows 8 problem are still welcome, if possible.

Got it to work for one brief moment, realized I was lagging, went to set settings to low and forgot to maintain the resolution where it was at. Resolution got set back to 800x600x16, and every time I tried to bump it up, I saw a notification that the resolution change failed. Now I'm playing on 1024x768, which isn't terrible I suppose. The worst part is, though, I'm still lagging! Any ideas on how to increase performance? I'll just research it on my own as well. Cheers!

It should detect EE2, however if GOG version has already patch 1.2, then it's OK to install just Unofficial Patch 1.4 on it.

Wait, you're playing on Windows 7 / VirtualBox? Or EE2 maximized on you Windows 8.1?
VirtualBox is not solution, it will always lagg, we need to solve the problem on Windows 8.1.

First of all:
1. What's the maximum possible screen resolution of your monitor?
2. What screen resolution this website shows?: http://forum.ee2.eu/h24-screen-resolution
3. Do not use compatibility mode when you start EE2.
4. You're trying to play EE2: The Art of Supremacy. Try to start the main version of Empire Earth II instead. (Go to a folder where the game is installed, and start the game from EE2.exe file).
5. Did you try to use the newest version of Windows 8 Fix (Updated on 26.12.2013), from the first post?
6. What is your graphics card? Search in graphic card settings for "Scaling settings". For Nvidia graphic cards:

(change it to: "No-scaling", if it doesn't work, then change to "Full-screen").

Btw. What antivirus software do you use?

3. Done. Switched it off.
4. Running EE2.exe from program files does the same it did from my first update last post. Black screen, small snippet of music.
5. I did, with the same results.
6. From the DirextX diagnostic tool, here's my graphics card settings: https://forum.ee2.eu/oldpics/o-ikHE05j.png Unfortunately, Intel sucks and doesn't give very advanced software for changing graphics options. I haven't looked into alternative software; just using OEM for the moment. Any suggestions?

Currently using Malwarebytes. As I've realized as well, VirtualBox lags far too much to make the gameplay enjoyable. Again, I really appreciate the help you've given me!

Did you try with the config files I sent?

Create a new user account on your computer and check if it solved the problem.
Do you have only "Intel HD Graphics 4000" in your (laptop?). Maybe your laptop has got a second graphics card.

If you really, really, really want to play EE2 - run it in windowed mode:

Sorry, I just forgot to tell you about it earlier.
The game won't be in full-screen mode, but still better than nothing. Maybe when the game start you'll be able to change graphics settings and make it work with full screen

I'd like to add that sometimes, I'd get error messages about permissions within the directory (Check that this files isn't being used in another program for Notepad++, and You don't have permission to save in this folder for Notepad). This is fixed by running either program as an administrator.

Install GameRanger to play online:

Almost all GameRanger players use Unofficial Patch 1.4, so you will have to install it:

After that join Empire Earth 2 GameRanger room and start Windows 8 FIX (EE2.EE2X-Windows8-FIX-by.DrMonaLisa.bat).
When the game start use ALT+TAB to maximize it.
After you exit EE2 wait for less than 30 seconds - Windows Explorer will start automatcally. You can also click any key in the Windowos 8 FIX window to start it immediately.

My Empire Earth II doesn't even run (not even with your batch file), I downloaded it from GoG (gold edition btw). It runs on my windows 7 computer and XP, but it does not run on my windows 8.1.

the resolution I am using is: 1280 x 800 but I have tried 1024 x 768

I received an error saying that I could not install the patch because EEII wasn't installed

this issue is driving me nuts because Empire Earth I works (well... runs) and Empire Earth II doesn't.

You tried to install Unofficial Patch 1.4? If yes, then GoG version has already patch 1.2 installed, you just need to install 1.4 (the first or the second installation version) - it won't give any error message.
