Cannot Install Patch --Windows 10 x64 ver. 2004

Post by Coo1 »

After upgrading to Win10/x64 v.2004 a few things happened:
(a) Windows removed my installation of EE2/AOS, patch and all executables
(b) After reinstalling the original EE2/AOS everything works fine
(c) Downloaded the Patch overriding windows warning
(d) CANNOT install the patch because of this message "Operation did not complete successfully because the file contains a virus or potentially unwanted software."

I am kinda reluctant to disable anti-virus software to install the patch. There must be a reason why this message is popping up... THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF "AFTERMARKET" PROGRAMS MADE BY LONELY CRAFTSMEN WHICH DO NOT TRIGGER THIS RESPONSE. I wonder why. Any thoughts?
But please do not instruct me to "disable antivirus" to install it. It was done before but Windows removed this patch and all executables in the the directory after it was installed. If this is the case then the only solution is to run EE2/AOS as the only application in Virtual Machine without protection.
What is the reason behind this peculiar windows behavior? Any solution?..

Before you wrote such an offensive topic, you should have manually scanned the UP1.5 executables, for example using virustotal.com:
https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/377 ... /detection
https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/b1b ... /detection

Only EE2X is detected by some Chinese AV Software: Rising and VIPRE. All other scanning engines don't trigger any alert.

From the information on UP1.5 website: https://www.ee2.eu/patch/#information
"If you don't trust, please simply don't download it"

From what I remember, for the past few years you have been constantly reporting "antivirus detections". Maybe it's just the time to stop using it, if after 7 years of UP1.5 you still don't trust it?

I also recommend you to re-educate yourself on English words meanings, especially what "potentially" means.

You are not using the default Windows Defender settings. By default option "Potentially unwanted app blocking" is disabled after a fresh Windows 10 2004 installation:

When I start the UP I got this :)
is't that risky?
Please read the following articles to learn what "Windows Defender SmartScreen" is:

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3197443 ... ws-10.html
https://www.howtogeek.com/75356/how-to- ... windows-8/

Basically, SmartScreen blocks ALL "unknown" programs from starting, because they're unrecognized.

Unofficial Patch 1.5 is actively developed, and Minor Updates are released at least 1 time per month.
You can read the changes log here: https://www.ee2.eu/patch/changes/

This means, that the installer file and other executables in the patch change very often. Due that our community is rather small, the cloud-based protection (SmartScreen) always warns users that the program is "unknown", "not popular".

Besides that, sometimes anti-virus programs are throwing false positives, usually for the same reason (not too many active users).
Recently, Windows Defender Antivirus was detecting the Launcher files as malicious. After my submission, Microsoft has analyzed the file, confirmed that it's safe and removed from their detection definitions. You can read this post on twitter for more information:
https://twitter.com/EE2News/status/1237697354918174720

However, if you still don't trust in this project, you're not forced to use it. You should google and read reviews about Unofficial Patch 1.5 on other websites / forums to get opinion from other users if it's safe or not.
The answer to reasons of the potential detection is also available on our Help page, which you should read before posting questions: https://www.ee2.eu/help/#antivirus

Further accusations will be ignored. If it continues, I would recommend you to file a lawsuit against me. I would gladly meet you at the court and let the judge / experts decide who deserves a recompensation. I am not agreeing to be continuously bombarded by sarcastic insults like this:

Give a single name of a fan-made game patch that doesn't have problems with AV programs.
You dare to compare UP1.5 Launcher to some normal programs, where heavy modification of game engine, injection of DLLs and hundreds of other things are not needed?
You're either a total ignorant, or you seriously have no idea what you're using for all those years. UP1.5 is based on HACKING the game process, modifying it's RAM memory, generating it depending on selected screen resolutions / hundreds of settings chosen as preferred in UP1.5 Settings. It injects DLLs for DirectX API calls conversions, it is capable to modify system registry in order to apply fixes, it is capable to KILL other running programs (Solution 1 in the Maximization Helper). After all this effort that is put to make this game running on the newest Windows versions, you dare to compare it so some simple programs which are all about a compilation of some self-written source code? Besides that, you totally ignore the fact of monthly updates that make it better? You are reporting a reputation-based alerts, while you have the knowledge of the size of our community, and how little it is. If the newest version of UP1.5 is downloaded by < 1000 people, it OBVIOUSLY is unknown for all antivirus engines. It is treated as NO REPUTATION software. However, you will still compare it to some program with the last update date in 2017 and thousands of downloads. Why? Because you have only negative feelings about me, and about UP1.5. For 7 years nothing bad has happened to you or your PC after using this software, yet you still come back to write shit public in a pretension tone, using CAPS TO MAKE SURE WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE YELLING AT THE DEVELOPER. Thanks for the de-motivation campaign. I very appreciate it. Maybe finally I'll drop this project that only brings shit on me.

EDIT: For all the people who think I overreacted in my reply: This user was reporting Antivirus "problems" on the Support chat for the past few years. Every time I've been explaining possibilities in a polite way, giving examples, solutions. So the first post in this topic should not be used as the only base to my reply. I'm angry of the continuous blames from this user, because it's what happens for a long time now.
